Arabic SEO: How to Rank in English and Arabic Search in the UAE

Ranking in English alone means missing a real share of UAE search behavior. Here's what's actually different about optimizing for Arabic search, beyond simply translating your pages.

Many UAE businesses build a fully bilingual website but only actually optimize the English side for search — the Arabic pages exist, but nobody finds them. Arabic SEO isn't just translation; it requires its own keyword research and technical setup.

Why Translation Alone Isn't Enough

A directly translated page often uses phrasing that's grammatically correct but isn't how Arabic-speaking users actually search. Real Arabic keyword research — understanding the specific terms, dialectal variations, and phrasing people use — is a separate research step from translating your English copy.

Technical Basics for Bilingual Sites

  • Use hreflang tags to tell Google which page is which language version — without this, search engines can get confused about which version to show whom.
  • Give each language its own URL structure (like /ar/ and /en/) rather than toggling content dynamically without distinct URLs.
  • Make sure right-to-left (RTL) layout is genuinely correct on the Arabic version, not just mirrored text in an English-designed layout — broken RTL undermines trust fast.

Content Strategy for Arabic Search

  • Research Arabic keywords independently — don't assume they're a direct translation of your English targets.
  • Consider dialect — Modern Standard Arabic (used in most formal web content) vs. colloquial phrasing people might actually type into Google.
  • Localize examples, currency, and cultural references, not just the language itself.

A quick health check: search your own target keywords in Arabic from a UAE location and see whether your Arabic pages show up at all. Many bilingual sites are invisible in Arabic search simply because no one checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need separate Arabic content, or can I just translate my English blog posts?

Translation is a reasonable starting point, but the strongest-performing Arabic content is written (or at minimum heavily adapted) with actual Arabic search behavior in mind, not machine-translated line by line.

Is Arabic SEO worth it if most of my customers speak English?

It depends on your audience and goals — but even English-fluent UAE residents sometimes search in Arabic, and having a credible Arabic presence signals local legitimacy regardless of who ultimately reads it.

How do I know if my hreflang setup is working correctly?

Google Search Console's International Targeting report flags hreflang errors directly — worth checking periodically, since a broken hreflang setup can quietly cause the wrong language version to rank in the wrong region.
